What started as a small garden in a vacant lot in this little inner-city neighborhood, quickly turned into the City of Dallas’ first urban farm. The original farm is 1.25 acres boldly situated in the South Dallas community of Bonton, an area ravaged by generational poverty, crime, and classified by the USDA as a food desert. In 2016, a local family, the Treffingers, were inspired by the mission of Bonton Farms and generously donated 20 acres of land located about 10 miles from the original farm. They loved it so much that when another 20 acre plot adjacent to the original one became available, they purchased it and donated it for further expansion of Bonton Farms. That 40 acre site is what we call "The Bonton Farms Extension". It happens to be one of the largest urban farms in the Unites States. In this unlikely setting, we are cultivating a sustainable and vibrant urban farm with the mission to restore lives, create jobs and ignite hope.

- Serve as the primary point of contact for daily facility and maintenance tasks.
- Monitor property and facility conditions daily, creating and maintaining a list of repair and maintenance priorities.
- Coordinate maintenance schedules, inspections, and vendor support in collaboration with the Facilities Manager.
- Ensure all work areas meet organizational standards for cleanliness, safety, and presentation.
- Perform general building maintenance, including light plumbing, painting, basic electrical, carpentry, and fixture repairs.
- Conduct preventive maintenance on tools, equipment, and facility systems.
- Oversee the cleaning and upkeep of interior and exterior areas including restrooms, kitchens, offices, and storage spaces.
- Maintain lawns, pathways, and landscaping areas through mowing, trimming, watering, and debris removal.
- Ensure proper storage and maintenance of cleaning supplies, tools, and materials.
- Support setup and breakdown of special events, meetings, and community gatherings.
- Assist with logistics related to deliveries, inventory organization, and property readiness for tours or rentals.
- Partner with cross-departmental teams to ensure maintenance needs are met for Café, Coffeehouse, Market, Farm, and community spaces.
- Conduct regular safety inspections and promptly address or report hazards.
- Maintain compliance with OSHA and organizational safety standards.
- Train staff and volunteers on safe use of tools, cleaning products, and equipment.
- Ensure all maintenance and cleaning procedures follow Bonton Farms’ sustainability and waste management practices.
- Model professionalism and stewardship of Bonton Farms’ properties as community assets.
- Provide courteous support to staff, guests, and community members.
- Reflect the organization’s mission through excellence in service, teamwork, and care for the space and people.
- High school diploma or GED required; trade or vocational training preferred.
- 3–5 years of progressive experience in facility maintenance, building operations, or custodial services.
- Demonstrated ability to lead or train others in maintenance or facility support roles.
- Working knowledge of tools, maintenance techniques, and light repair practices.
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to prioritize multiple projects.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform physically demanding tasks indoors and outdoors.
- Valid Texas driver’s license required; ability to operate small vehicles, utility carts, or light equipment preferred.
- Regularly works both indoors and outdoors across Bonton Farms properties, including exposure to varying weather conditions.
- May be required to work occasional evenings, weekends, or special events to support operational needs.
- Must be comfortable engaging with diverse community members and working in a mission-driven, team-oriented setting.

For the last 200 years, racial injustice and systemic oppression prevented opportunities in Bonton, a community in South Dallas, that were a given elsewhere. People here experienced higher rates of diabetes, stroke and cancer, and 48% of residents lived in poverty. Residents have been denied access to the seven human essentials that are necessary to survive and thrive - health & wellness, economic stability, safe and affordable housing, transportation, a sense of belonging, education and access to fair credit. Today, the community is transforming, and healing is coming from within.
